Exciting News For Oasis Appliance and Home!

July 30, 2017

oasis-appliance-100x1161) Praise God for His Provision: Oasis Appliance has been awarded a capacity building grant through Community LIFT! Due to this, we will have partial funding to hire a part-time assistant manager at the store this summer! This will help us provide better service to our customers and donors, as well as, free up our leadership team to seek more corporate partners and donations for the store. We are thankful to the Lord for his faithfulness to this nine-year-old ministry that continues to beat the odds and provide a needed service (affordable appliances and furniture) as well as jobs to our community!

2) Oasis Appliance Moving Home: As many of you know, Oasis Appliance & Home Furnishings suffered a fire last fall and has been operating out of a space in the Frayser Northgate Shopping Center. Well…God has graciously granted our prayers to move back into our neighborhood! Belz Enterprizes has generously given to this opportunity in the form of a long-term, extremely affordable, lease … AND substantial funding toward the renovation of the space! Dinner on Demand, Hope Church’s kitchen ministry, has also partnered in a HUGE way to provide $50,000 towards this needed renovation from fire to storefront! Additionally, Hope contractors and volunteers have stepped up to help save costs in the renovation by offering discounted or free services as we walk through the process of rebuilding. We feel God’s grace in this and want to give Him all the credit. Pray for us as we go through the challenging process of renovating a store that has suffered significant fire/smoke damage.

OA-fire-8-28-2016-web215x21—> In the meantime, if you’re a Hope Church attender, you can easily deliver any items both big and small to the “Oasis Appliance” trailer in the parking lot outside Entrance 3, or contact us for pickup, or call 901-577-0013.

We are temporarily operating in the Frayser Northgate Shopping Center, 3154 Thomas Street (behind AutoZone), Tuesday-Saturday 10a-4pm. Come check us out! Everyone is welcome to shop and every sale helps provide job training & employment for an under-resourced community.

Working Together To Provide A Food Pantry Partnership!

July 26, 2017

2017-4-food-pantry-web800We are excited about a new ministry partnership happening in North Memphis!

Often times ministry programs develop when one of our connected volunteers sees a need and is moved to help fill a void.

This is how Oasis Appliance began, and our Warrior Princesses program for middle school girls, and now … a food pantry aimed at assisting 60 North Memphis families whose children attend Memphis Scholars Caldwell Guthrie (MSCG) elementary school.

This came about after a volunteer reading tutor who works with students several days a month personally witnessed numerous students suffering from a lack of nutrition. Her heart was moved, she shared this need, and several partnerships began working together to do something about it! MSCG, Mid-South Food Bank, Hope City Church, and Oasis of Hope combined forces and have just begun to serve 60 families who will receive groceries and toiletries through this initiative. The food component of this mission has become an added value to MSCG’s new outreach center which also includes a clothes closet and washer and dryer.

2017-4-food-pantry-(13)-webSixty families have been carefully identified and are personally invited to receive the bi-monthly box of groceries and toiletries. This means that 30 families will be served every other month for the next 12 months (including the summer). Grocery boxes may consist of items such as canned fruit & vegetables, beans, cereal, juice and milk.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

In an effort to keep the boxes of food consistent, we are in need of financial donations to support this ongoing mission! Family boxes of groceries and toiletries cost approximately $25/each due to buying in bulk and utilizing assistance from organizations like the Mid-South Food Bank.

Donations can be made online or checks can be sent to Oasis of Hope, 8500 Walnut Grove Road, Cordova, TN 38018. Please list ‘Food Pantry’ in the memo.

WHEN IS THE FOOD DISTRIBUTED?

This outreach is available every 2nd Saturday of the month from 11am-12pm, by appointment only.

We are grateful for the tender heart of the volunteer who looked way beyond her important mission of reading with students, and not only spoke up, but has now put into motion a practical, helpful program that will make a BIG impact in the lives of 60 families! That is what ministry looks like!

Why SLA is Impacting North Memphis this Summer

July 22, 2017

summer-leadership-academy-2We believe that some of our city’s greatest leaders will emerge from under-resourced communities like North Memphis.

Summer Leadership Academy is an 8-week leadership training experience conducted by Oasis of Hope to provide our high school student leaders with the resources needed to elevate their leadership capacities. This includes biblical training, career readiness, community service, and exposure outings that will help our youth grow and develop into the potential that God has given them.

  • Cultural Exposure – We are providing strategic opportunities to enlarge the worldview and perspective of our student leaders. We want to help our youth see what’s possible when motivated by love and faith. For example, youth will attend a diversity training at Bridges as well as experience racial & economic diversity by attending St. Jude, Slavehaven, art shows and cross cultural service projects.
  • Leadership Development – We seek to provide spiritual, character and vocational training to enlarge the understanding and competencies of our youth. We want to help our student leaders become more functional in their faith.  For example, our business professional mentors are teaching the students many of the business essentials to succeed in the workforce.
  • Service Opportunities – Our students are experiencing the workplace in an on-the-job setting serving as interns at Chick-fil-A and Oasis Appliance. In addition, many served as volunteer leaders at our Summer VBS program and other outreaches designed to stretch their leadership muscles and grow in this essential aspect of their lives.

Our youth with spend a week serving through Service Over Self (SOS) camp, learning the importance and benefits of serving others.

They will also have 6-week internships with local companies doing everything from maintenance, landscaping, restaurant service, retail customer service, cashier positions and truck delivery services. They will spend time each week in group settings learning key life and employment skills through professional instruction and team building activities. A sincere thanks to all of the businesses providing our teens summer internships and giving our kids at chance to make a difference!

Values taught through our program are: Love for God, Love for Self, Love for Others, Love for Community/City, Leadership/Discipleship, and Social Justice.

Graduation will be celebrated July 25th.

This program not only gives our youth practical training for the future beyond high-school, but many of them find immediate benefits from the experience. For instance, all of our Chick-fil-A students last year were offered on-going employment at their establishment!

An investment in our youth is an investment in the future of our city!

Summer Means It’s Time for Baseball! Batter Up!

June 04, 2017

manassas-baseball-100x116Our youth (and their parents!) desire fun and active things to do while school is out and few things signify summer fun like baseball!

We partner with A Game Sports to provide a program teaching fundamentals, team spirit and fun competition. Over the last few years we have had winning seasons by our teams as they put into practice what they’re learning. This year we plan to have 2 teams (14 & under and 10 & under).

How You Can Help:

Donate: If you’d like to help make this American summer tradition possible for our kids (and free to them) – the costs for this outreach including coaching, league fees, equipment and transportation is roughly $4,000.

Volunteer: Also, if you like baseball and have some time, we’d love your help coaching these awesome kids!

Send Your Kids: Practices will be held most evenings at the Bickford Community Center baseball field. Schedules will be handed out at practice. Teams will be divided into a 10 & Under and a 14 & Under.

kroger 275x303Kroger Requires You to Re-Enroll Your Desired Non-Profit Each January: Shop at Kroger and Donate 3-5% without writing a check!

Each January 1st, all Kroger Community Reward Participants are required to renew their organization of choice to receive Kroger reward payments. We are hoping you will choose Oasis of Hope!

It may seem like a small act, but it’s a huge help! Designating Oasis of Hope on your Kroger card allows you to donate to our ministry each time you shop for groceries or buy gas!

For example, if 2,500 people spent $100, Oasis could receive a total of $7,500!

We can do a lot of ministry with that!

It takes about 3 minutes and registering your Kroger Plus Card is easier than ever:

If you already have an existing Kroger account:

  1. Sign in to your Kroger account at www.kroger.com/communityrewards
  2. Click ‘View Your Rewards Details,’ edit your Community Rewards, and search for ‘Oasis of Hope’ (or 80469). Click ‘enroll’

Meet Our Two New R2S Interns Sharice and LaDerika

April 22, 2017

R2S-interns2-web800 “Readers become Leaders”, is one of our mottos at Read2Succeed (R2S)! Sharice Johnson and LaDerika were selected back in November to be our first student interns to help with Read2Succeed. Sharice is in 7th grade and LaDerika is in 8th grade at KIPP Academy. Currently both attend Oasis of Hope Pathfinders & Middle School Club. They started as Read2Succeed students in 2nd grade and attended through 5th grade. Besides involvement with Oasis of Hope they were selected because of their eagerness to learn & willingness to help others.

The student internship positions were created, to not only help R2S coordinators, but to also encourage Sharice & LaDerika to become disciples of Christ. Learning more about God & applying their leadership skills to help others in their community is an Oasis mission. Both girls roles are that of assistant to the Youth Coordinator & R2S-interns-web800Volunteer Coordinator. Frequently, tutors will be absent and interns fill in for them. Sharice and LaDerika have been trained how to teach sight words & follow “Team Read” tutoring steps. They also help students memorize scripture and read Bible stories together. The importance of arriving on time, following a “duties” check list, problem solving & organizational skills promote job skills. The younger R2S students get to see older students in a leadership role as well.

When asked what they like best about being a R2S Student Intern, LaDerika stated, “It helps improve my reading skills.” Sharice says she “likes to help organize & set up.”

They are a huge asset to the success of our program & are a blessing to me”, states coordinator, Kathleen McDonald.

Since both interns are younger than 16-years-old we are not allowed to pay them for their positions, however, we can honor their help by awarding them with Family Dollar gift cards (their favorite). If you would like to support the work of our interns, gift cards accepted!

To volunteer or for more information about this ministry, contact Kathleen. Stay up-to-date by liking us on Facebook, following us on Twitter and Instagram, and checking our website for detailed information.

Toy Store Pop-Up Shop Was So Much Fun! Thank You!

November 30, 2016

fav13-web800Saturday, Dec. 10, 2016 was an amazing day!

Oasis of Hope partnered with Hope City Church & Hope Church to host the annual Oasis Toy Store as a One Day Pop-up Toy Store due to a fire earlier in the year at the Oasis Appliance & Furnishings store where we normally house the toys over a two-week period. On this one day alone we were able to host approximately 150 families with approximately 5 children per family, impacting around 700 children ranging in ages from 2 months to 16 years of age!

Not too shabby for ONE day! God is Amazing!

fav4-web800I would like to extend a sincere heartfelt THANK YOU from myself and Oasis of Hope first to our “elves”… ALL OF YOU from Hope City Church and Hope Church who donated toys or volunteered your time! We could not have done any of it without you helping to setup, price toys, help families with their packages, etc. Pastor Colley Cooper…you are a true gem! Hope Church congregation….THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!! Without all of your wonderful donations this toy store could not be this successful! What YOU donated is appreciated not only by Oasis but also by the North Memphis families whom we desire to support in providing a memorable and affordable Christmas for their children.

I personally want to thank you all again & look forward to the 2017 Toy Store and the joy & blessings it provides during the Christmas season to so many. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

– Toy Store Director, Melissa Orr
