How One Guy Used His Love for the Game (Baseball That Is!)

September 21, 2013

2013-7-team-photoThe Summer Baseball season is already half over, but the lessons learned, the love & care invested by our coaches and volunteers, and the memories built swinging out a few victories and a few losses will be impressions that last a lifetime for the kids from North Memphis who have participated in this great program (of course there is no fee to play).

The Bickford Tigers Baseball Team has been a largely successful weekday program for neighborhood kids! The junior team (ages 12 and under) has an outstanding record of 5-0! The older team (ages 13-16) has played with great intensity against very talented teams has a record of 2-4.

These kids show such a passion for the game and in the words of Coach Tyler Moore,

‘Coach Rob and I are so blessed to teach these athletes what baseball is all about. The kids have made a huge impact on us and our goal is to make a difference in their lives as well.’

You never know when you might be able to use your personal talents to help others as can be learned from Coach Tyler whose mom attended Urban Plunge last fall. When the Plungers toured Oasis’ ministry neighborhood, she kept thinking about her son and his love for baseball.

Fast-forward several months and Tyler was excited to commit to teaching a summer program, recruit his former teammate Rob Alvarex to assist, and was happy to have former Oasis baseball coach who lives in the neighborhood, Barry Landon, round off their coaching staff. Also, an anonymous philanthropist offered to fund the program! We can’t thank these guys enough for making such a deep impact in the kids’ lives and for providing a healthy activity for them to participate in Monday-Friday!

Games are held Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:00am at various locations. If you are interested in cheering on the teams or would like more information about this ministry, contact Coach Tyler.

Busy Oasis Seniors Partner With Hope Again & Urban Plunge

May 24, 2013

mens-retreat-100x116Oasis Seniors meet daily from 9a-1p at the Bickford Community Center and have a plethora of daily events that make growing older look fun and exciting!

Here is a glimpse of what the seniors have been up to this past month alone:

Recently 17 men and women participated in a field trip from North Memphis to the suburbs to visit our partnering ministry store, Hope Again-Second Hand Boutique. This was especially touching because some of the funds raised from Hope Again benefit Oasis programs, like the Senior Program. It was meaningful to witness this cyclical support of ministries working together, supporting one another, and benefiting from the drastically reduced prices in the store! Treasures were discovered such as clothing, jewelry, purses, belts, ties, home decor, bath products, and new friendships were forged! A second trip is already in the works for those who wanted to attend but could not.

And speaking of field trips, in conjunction with the Aging Commission’s requirement of providing high impact, educational outings that allow seniors to experience local resources and cultivate knowledge, upcoming regional trips are being planned to visit Sikeston, Gatlinburg and/or Hot Springs! Last month they enjoyed attending a Senior Expo, Africa in April, and visiting Casey Jones’ Country Store and Restaurant!

Other exciting news is that the Oasis Senior Program recently received an additional $10,000 to implement an improved fitness program! These funds allow us to offer additional exercise classes like therapeutic massage, water aerobics, or weekly wii games to help improve overall health and wellness.

Another touching interaction recently happened between partnering ministries when the Senior program was given a very special donation so that our senior men could enjoy a little pampering at an In-House Men’s Retreat! This was sponsored by Dr. Tom Carrier, Hope Church volunteer, after his visit to Bickford in September during the Urban Plunge. Keusi Donald, Master Barber and Stylist from Rone’s Hair Gallery, gave haircuts, shaves prayer, and education to several deserving men. We are grateful for Dr. Tom’s gift that meant so much to so many!

So, although succinctly describing what we ‘do’ is hard to summarize, one thing is easy to point out: our Senior Program is growing and our seniors are on the move living longer and living stronger!

We Gathered to Remember and to Look Forward with Hope

March 10, 2013

Honoring Ms. Karen: On Wednesday, February 27, we hosted a dinner for our Oasis families in honor of Karen Durham, who went home to be with the Lord. It also gave our families the opportunity to know more about what Oasis of Hope is all about. The dinner was held at Bickford Community Center, and we had about 150 people in attendance for what turned out to be a very special evening. Please continue to pray for Karen’s family and loved ones!

Urban Plungers Conclude Mission Trip to the Inner City

March 04, 2013

Missed the current Plunge but are interested in catching the next one? Plan to attend our next Plunge September 2013!

Join us to see parts of Memphis you may not even know exist and be encouraged by all of the partnering ministries working alongside of Oasis and Hope Urban to make Memphis’ inner city even better. Join Eli and the Urban Staff as they lead the group through our own inner-city and to cultural landmarks famous in Memphis’ rich civil rights history.

Some of the places we visit are:

- Streets Ministries
- Oasis of Hope (The Green House, In the Cut, Bickford Community Center, Oasis Appliance, The Bike Shop, Sweet Shirts, & KIPP Memphis School)
- Youth United with Senior Citizens
- National Civil Rights Museum
- Memphis Leadership Foundation
- Eikon Ministries
- Economic Opportunities
- Luke 4:18 Ministries
- Slave Haven
- First Baptist Church Broad

We have two Plunges a year, one in March and the other in September. The cost is $200 but we feel this is such an important experience that we subsidize part of the expenses and only charge $100 per person (members and long-time attendees) or $175 (non-members). Overnight lodging, meals and snacks are provided. We like to keep our groups small for a more personal experience so we limit our roster to no more than 32.

Trip Details:

The Plungers’ schedule is to leave Thursday evening and return to Hope on the following Sunday afternoon. While away we stay at one of our ministry partners in a dorm style fashion; all the women in one room and all the men in the other. We provide beds but you must bring your own linens or a sleeping bag, toiletries, clothes and a pillow.

All your meals are provided along with beverages and snacks. We have speakers come in, panel discussions, visit approximately 10 of our ministry partners, tour the National Civil Rights Museum and Slave Haven, eat lunch on Friday in one of our many urban, home cooking restaurants, eat Saturday dinner in Eli’s home, have a work project on Saturday from 8am to 1pm in North Memphis, and end the weekend by attending First Baptist Church on Broad Avenue. We do a lot in a couple days and the whole experience will stretch your mind, heart and beliefs in a way you never imagined.

You will be changed by this three day journey and moved to view our city in a new way.

For more information about how you can attend our next Plunge, contact Di.
