Play Ball! Cheer on the Manassas Baseball Team

March 30, 2013

You have probably heard that Oasis of Hope provides volunteer coaches for the Manassas Football Team (we hope you have seen the Oscar Winning ‘Undefeated’ movie by now!), but did you know that we provide the same support for the Manassas Baseball Team? Coaching is one of the best ways to get to know the team and to coach the players not only on the field, but in their personal lives as well. In addition, Oasis volunteers came together a few years ago to fund, build and maintain the beautiful ball diamond that Manassas High School now calls their own!

One of our most long-standing volunteer coaches, Michael Timmons, who has been working with the team for at least seven years, has been working with the boys since they were 10 years old! When asked why he’s hung in there so long he said, “It’s because of the bond with these young men and the love they have shown me. My family continues to grow and there are not enough hours in the day between family, work, and baseball, but the relationships I have formed with these young men will be forever part of the lives of me and my family.  I feel strongly that God has put me in the lives of our players and that he uses the game of baseball to bring me and our players closer to him.”

In addition to providing volunteer coaches, a spring training camp, and occasional team meals, we want to fill the stands with cheering fans! Check out the game schedule below and join us!

Training Camp Update (March 2013): The spring training camp at Hope was a success. Seventeen young players participated. They spent time in classroom settings, batting cages, in-field scenarios, out-field practice and general fundamentals. Volunteers not only helped with these key components, but also provided meals, guest speakers and encouragement. This week’s camp and season is dedicated to the memory of Karen Durham, Oasis’ founding staff member who has poured her life into our youth & adults for the past decade. Eric McCreight, Coach Mac, gave a powerful message to the boys about the fundamentals of the faith… “to live justly, love mercy and walk humbly with your God” from Micah 6:8.

We Gathered to Remember and to Look Forward with Hope

March 10, 2013

Honoring Ms. Karen: On Wednesday, February 27, we hosted a dinner for our Oasis families in honor of Karen Durham, who went home to be with the Lord. It also gave our families the opportunity to know more about what Oasis of Hope is all about. The dinner was held at Bickford Community Center, and we had about 150 people in attendance for what turned out to be a very special evening. Please continue to pray for Karen’s family and loved ones!

Undefeated is Finally Released on DVD; It’s a Must See!

February 20, 2013

So, what is Oasis’ connection with she Manassas Football Team and the documentary ‘Undefeated’? For years we have assisted Manassas High School in providing volunteer coaches, pre-game meals, fans in the stands, and conducted a pre-season training camp for the players where we not only hone their athletic skills, but their spiritual game as well!

Oasis’ staff was highly involved in assisting the movie directors as they shot hours and hours of film of the team. Undefeated takes place in our ministry neighborhood and chronicles the Manassas Tigers’ 2009 football season, on and off-the-field, as they strive to win the first playoff game in the high school’s 110-year history.

A perennial whipping boy, in recent decades Manassas had gone so far as to sell their home games to the highest bidder, but that all changed in the spring of 2004 when Bill Courtney, a former high school football coach (and former Hope Pres member) turned lumber salesman, volunteered to lend a hand. When he arrived, the team consisted of 17 players, some timeworn equipment and a patch of grass masquerading as a practice field. Focusing more on winning young men than football games, the football program nevertheless began resurrecting itself and, in 2009, features the most talented team Manassas has ever fielded; a team that seems poised to end the playoff jinx that has plagued the school since time immemorial.

A coming-of-age documentary film, Undefeated provides audiences an intimate view of an underprivileged group of teens and their inspirational coach, as they attempt to make history. This film features Montrail ‘Money’ Brown, O.C. Brown, Bill Courtney and Chavis Daniels.

Presently, the DVD can be purchased online at Walmart for 50% off ($9.96!) … click here to purchase.

Our Volunteer Coaches Hit Mentoring Homeruns

January 10, 2013

When asked what the biggest challenge has been over the years, Michael said it’s the pressure to not be able to do more. “Many of our boys have told me that I am like a father to them. This is the ultimate compliment but I really only serve 200-250 hours per year with them and for them to say that is setting the bar very low for their expectations of what a father is. They deserve so much more! Many of our players face so many more challenges than I realized 7 years ago and I wish I could level the playing field for them in life but I have come to realize that I can’t.

The biggest reward that Michael has seen over the past seven years has been “Watching young men mature and place others before themselves. Our boys come in as freshman, often very self centered (they are after all teenagers), many of them by the time they are juniors or seniors start placing others above themselves. We as coaches play a very small part in that as parents, grandparents, faculty, older siblings, and many others shape these youngsters but knowing God has used me as a piece of that puzzle is very rewarding. Knowing what options our boys have to consume their time and seeing them choose to spend it on the ball field is also extremely humbling.  As a teen, I made many poor choices as a young man in how I spent my time and knowing where they might be if they were not at practice makes practice all the more rewarding.”

At Oasis of Hope, we cannot wish for better leaders than those like Michael Timmons! He caught the vision, shared his skill of baseball, and has committed his free time to investing in these boys!! THANK YOU MICHAEL!!!!

If you have a love for the game and would like to join the volunteer coaching staff or to simply cheer on the team, we’d love to have you! Contact Terrice for more information.
