Thanksgiving Baskets Are Coming! Get One or Give One

September 11, 2016

Whole Homemade Thanksgiving TurkeySlow basted turkeys, mom’s homemade stuffing, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, collard greens, pumpkin pie … mmmmm … is your mouth watering yet?

Each year around this time we start taking Thanksgiving Basket orders for anyone living in North Memphis who’d like one. We start by spreading the word among families currently involved in one of our many ministry programs such as: Read2Succeed, Angel Street Choir, Warrior Princesses, Pathfinders (Middle School Bible Study), Life Builders (High School Bible Study), families renting homes in Bearwater Park/North Memphis from us, those involved in our young mom’s ministry, and of course, all of our senior citizens who are involved in our daily program … and beyond!

A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor – Proverbs 22:9

Here’s what you need to do to order yours:

Join us in worshiping together from 12:00-1:15pm at Hope City Church (Caldwell-Guthrie School, 951 Chelsea Ave) and then register for your basket at the close of the service Nov. 6 or 13. Cost per basket is $5 (cash only) and will need to be turned in at the time of registration.

Pick up your basket after worshiping with us on Nov. 20 at Hope City Church. We’ll be around from 12-3pm with plenty of time to plan your menu for your holiday feast on Nov. 24th!

If you have extra and would like to donate food for the Thanksgiving Baskets:

Drop-off your donations at any of our Oasis of Hope office locations, or Hope Church in the marked carts located across the campus anytime in November, or just leave them behind your vehicle in the parking lot and we will pick them up while you attend Hope Church services each weekend.

Local Leader, Ella, Helps Share A Dignified Thanksgiving

November 02, 2015

2015-ella-miller-web500Who’s coming for Thanksgiving dinner at your house? A typical Thanksgiving meal at Ella Miller’s house will involve feeding 50+ family members. With 11 children and 26 grandchildren, you better know how to cook and be able to cook on a budget. Ella Miller can do both, but even then food costs make it difficult. She understands that many of her North Memphis neighbors aren’t able to feed their families anything special on Thanksgiving.

For the last 10 years, Ms. Ella has helped Oasis of Hope make it easier for families to celebrate Thanksgiving around a healthy delicious meal. Each October, Oasis of Hope signs up families to purchase a Thanksgiving basket of food for $7. What’s on the menu? Turkey, stuffing, sweet peas, corn, yams, mash potatoes, cranberries, cake mix, & frosting! Yum!!! And all of that for $7!! Thanks to Hope Presbyterian Church members’ food donations, the costs are kept to a minimum.

This year, Ms. Ella was our neighborhood coordinator. Families in North Memphis contacted her and within two weeks she had 184 families sign-up!!! The food baskets will be distributed from the Oasis of Hope ministry house on November 23rd with Ms. Ella directing volunteers to help unload. Over the years, this annual distribution day thanksgiving-food-drive100xhas taken place during rain, snow and even very warm temperatures which makes passing out frozen turkeys a challenge! Whatever the weather, it’s an exciting day because hearts are grateful for the Lord’s provision of a celebratory meal.

If you would like to donate food items and support families like Ella’s, please bring donations to Hope Church. Look for the shopping carts or leave the food behind your car during the service.

– Turkey (frozen, 10-12 lbs)
– Canned green beans
– Canned peas
– Canned corn
– Canned yams
– Boxed instant potatoes
– Cranberry sauce
– Stuffing
– Cake mix
– Vanilla Frosting

We even game First Baptist Broad approximately 2,400 canned goods to use for their Thanksgiving buffet! Oasis of Hope received 319 of these donations for our neighborhood, helping families afford a full thanksgiving dinner. Each meal fed 5 to 6 family members with of course some leftovers. Oasis had 13 volunteers involved from Hope and the neighborhood, thank you. We could not have done this without you!

575 Inner City Families had a Thanksgiving Meal Thanks To You!

May 11, 2012

assembling thanksgiving food basketsThank you to everyone who donated food or volunteered your time to assemble and distribute 575 Thanksgiving baskets that were handed out over the Thanksgiving holiday!  It requires quite a team to gather, organize, box and deliver this much food before each turkey thaws out!  People who received their ‘meal in a box’ were so appreciative and grateful.  We couldn’t  pull off such feats without all of your help so thank you again!
