Sign Up with Amazon Smile and Re-Enroll Your Kroger Card

February 08, 2017

kroger 275x303Kroger Requires You to Re-Enroll Your Desired Non-Profit Each January: Shop at Kroger and Donate 3-5% without writing a check!

Each January 1st, all Kroger Community Reward Participants are required to renew their organization of choice to receive Kroger reward payments. We are hoping you will choose Oasis of Hope!

It may seem like a small act, but it’s a huge help! Designating Oasis of Hope on your Kroger card allows you to donate to our ministry each time you shop for groceries or buy gas!

For example, if 2,500 people spent $100, Oasis could receive a total of $7,500!

We can do a lot of ministry with that!

It takes about 3 minutes and registering your Kroger Plus Card is easier than ever:

If you already have an existing Kroger account:

  1. Sign in to your Kroger account at www.kroger.com/communityrewards
  2. Click ‘View Your Rewards Details,’ edit your Community Rewards, and search for ‘Oasis of Hope’ (or 80469). Click ‘enroll’

If you are registering your Kroger account for the first time:

  1. Creat an account at www.kroger.com/communityrewards
  2. Follow the prompts to enter your email, password, & address.
  3. Click ‘View Your Rewards Details’ and designate Oasis of Hope as your Community Rewards recipient by typing ‘Oasis of Hope’ in the Search box (or #80469). Click ‘enroll’

That’s it!

amazon-smile-logo110x116AmazonSmile will donate 0.5% of eligible purchases to Oasis of Hope! Same products, same service!

To designate your existing Amazon account:

  1. Go to www.smile.amazon.com (email/password); click ‘Sign In’
  2. Type “Oasis of Hope” in the search field (Cordova, TN) & select … then Start Shopping! From then on Amazon will remind you to sign in with using the ‘Smile’ site every time you log on.

Shop online via Smile.Amazon.com rather than Amazon.com. Smile.Amazon.com has the same products, prices, and service as Amazon.com, and Oasis of Hope will receive a donation from Amazon equal to .5% of your purchases placed through Smile.Amazon.com.

Invite family and friends from across the country to support Oasis of Hope by designating Oasis of Hope, Inc. on their Amazon account and shop through Smile.Amazon.com.

Why Has Our Senior Program Doubled? Volunteers Needed!

January 08, 2017

web2-IMG_3460Any line dancers out there? How about computer nerds? Or maybe you’re a quilter or an arts and crafts fan?

Have you ever considered that using your personal interests and talents could immensely bless others? Our senior ministry has doubled to 123 members in the past few years and we are in need of at least five more weekly volunteers to come and hang out with us! We are bursting at the seams but are thrilled that the word has spread that Bickford Senior Center is the ‘happening place to be’ for those 60 and over in North Memphis!

Our Seniors Program Director of nearly 3 years, Shirley Glenn, in partnership with Activities Coordinator, Leon Murrell, have poured themselves into advocating for our seniors and have been growing and expanding the programming we offer to provide activities that are truly needed and wanted. Practical, helpful, useful and fun events rotate weekly and this program has evolved from a place to perhaps cool off or warm up, to a place that offers educational, healthful, spiritual, practical, financial and fun activities for members, volunteers and staff to enjoy Mondays-Fridays from 8am-1pm.

The atmosphere around the center is very casual but bustling. Friendships are formed here, and relationships are developed that go beyond a neighborly hello. Seniors look forward to spending time with their friends doing the typically expected activities such as playing bingo or wii, sewing or making ceramics, exercising by line dancing or practicing water aerobics, and attending the highly-anticipated field trips that are both educational and social.

2014-susan-harber-110x116However, so much more is offered in addition to the assumed senior activities. Through seeking out numerous local partnerships, seniors can expect delicious free meals, optometry assistance, regular health check-ups, massages, needed home repair, and financial help. And programming is continually expanding and evolving to address new needs as they arise. For example, cell provider, Cricket, will be coming next week to work with anyone needing a lesson on how to use their cell phones. UT nursing interns are scheduled to check blood pressures and discuss blood sugar. The Red Cross will be coming to address disaster awareness. MPD is always nearby and can often be talked into playing a round of Spades. We’d like to give a special thanks to the City of Memphis, Division of Parks & Neighborhoods for their generosity in providing this facility free of charge!

This is a FUN place to be and the activity calendar is packed providing both the social and the practical! Come teach a line dance, or show someone how to send an email, or just simply provide a listening ear and adopt a grandparent! If you have a heart for seniors and a hobby or skill you are willing to share, we invite you to hang out in the most happening spot in North Memphis!

To volunteer or to become a member (free; must be 60 years or older), contact Shirley. Stay up-to-date by liking us on Facebook, following us on Twitter and Instagram, and checking our website for detailed information.

Thanksgiving Baskets Are Coming! Get One or Give One

September 11, 2016

Whole Homemade Thanksgiving TurkeySlow basted turkeys, mom’s homemade stuffing, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, collard greens, pumpkin pie … mmmmm … is your mouth watering yet?

Each year around this time we start taking Thanksgiving Basket orders for anyone living in North Memphis who’d like one. We start by spreading the word among families currently involved in one of our many ministry programs such as: Read2Succeed, Angel Street Choir, Warrior Princesses, Pathfinders (Middle School Bible Study), Life Builders (High School Bible Study), families renting homes in Bearwater Park/North Memphis from us, those involved in our young mom’s ministry, and of course, all of our senior citizens who are involved in our daily program … and beyond!

A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor – Proverbs 22:9

Here’s what you need to do to order yours:

Join us in worshiping together from 12:00-1:15pm at Hope City Church (Caldwell-Guthrie School, 951 Chelsea Ave) and then register for your basket at the close of the service Nov. 6 or 13. Cost per basket is $5 (cash only) and will need to be turned in at the time of registration.

Pick up your basket after worshiping with us on Nov. 20 at Hope City Church. We’ll be around from 12-3pm with plenty of time to plan your menu for your holiday feast on Nov. 24th!

If you have extra and would like to donate food for the Thanksgiving Baskets:

Drop-off your donations at any of our Oasis of Hope office locations, or Hope Church in the marked carts located across the campus anytime in November, or just leave them behind your vehicle in the parking lot and we will pick them up while you attend Hope Church services each weekend.

Twenty-two Oasis Seniors Are Given the Gift of Sight!

July 31, 2015

2015-6-free-eye-careCan you imagine being a senior citizen with a desperate need for a pair of glasses, but no financial resources to get them?

Recently we were thrilled to partner with the Southern College of Optometry who provided forty-four FREE eye exams AND eye glasses individually tailored to our 22 of our seniors who needed them! Most of the seniors at Bickford Senior Center are on a fixed income and have not had an eye exam in over 5 years, despite needing one desperately! The seniors were very excited that they were able to receive such services.

As the Director of the Senior Ministry, my goal is to make sure we are meeting the needs of our seniors. Elizabeth Williams with Southern College of Optometry called the office inquiring if we would be interested in free eye exams for our seniors and asked if we could provide the space needed for the exams. I immediately said, “Yes!”

Most of the seniors found out during their exams they needed more eye care. Since this partnership was such a success, we will be considering another eye care event this coming December, date to be announced.

Thank you so much to the Southern College of Optometry! And seniors … enjoy seeing life a whole lot clearly now!

-Shirley Glenn, Director of Senior Ministry at Oasis of Hope

Preach the Gospel at All Times … When Necessary Use Words -St. Francis of Assissi

Something exciting is happening in Memphis on Saturday, April 26th! Join in and be a part of history!!

Faith in Action is a project initiated by Mayor Wharton to help clean up the City of Memphis. Years ago, Memphis was always being recognized for its cleanliness and always held an annual event called CleanUP, PaintUP, FixUP in which volunteers and school kids from all over the city came together to clean up the city. This Faith in Action Event this year is similar but with a different name.

The Mayor is hoping to have the largest ever clean up project, not just in Memphis, but in the country!

He is hoping that at least 300 organizations will sign up and that more than 10,000 volunteers will participate some time during the project weekend to help. Teams and individuals can register here to get involved. Hope Church will have three teams:

faith-in-action-web5001) Hope Presbyterian Church which will focus their efforts in the Cordova area and also work with a couple of schools in that area
2) Oasis of Hope, which will focus in the Bickford/Caldwell area, and
3) Hope Presbyterian–Urban Ministry–which will focus on an area in the Chelsea/Hollywood area.

One way for an individual to register to be part of a team is to go to the website and follow the instructions below:

1) On the Home Page click Register Now
2) After you click the register now button, there is an option as to whether you are registering as an individual or team. Select individual.
3) Once you click individual, complete the information requested which includes the question “Would you like to join a registered team”. Click “team”. A box will appear that says “Select a Current Registered Team”. Click on the down arrow and you should see an alphabetical list of teams that have registered including Hope Presbyterian Church, Oasis of Hope, and Hope Church Urban Ministry.

Then, you just need to complete the rest of the information requested and show up on Saturday, April 26th between 10:00-2:00pm! Note – light refreshments will be served.

Oasis Volunteer Recently Highlighted in Local Paper!

April 12, 2014

2014-susan-harber-110x116Susan Harbor, one of our faithful senior volunteers, was recently featured in The Best Times The Monthly News Magazine for Active Mature Mid-Southerners – April 2014 and was promoted as an invaluable volunteer (we already knew that!!)! Here’s what the article said:

Susan Harbor – Oasis of Hope Senior Center: Those who know Susan Harbor say she is an incredible volunteer who epitomizes what volunteerism is all about. She volunteers at the Oasis of Hope Senior Center in North Memphis at the Bickford Community Center. She is at the center every Thursday and facilitates the Wii games for the seniors from 9a-noon. The seniors have so much fun and love her! She is kind and giving, and loves them as much as they love her. Susan also helps make holidays special. She assists the Easter celebration by bringing craft supplies so that the seniors can make Easter hats and compete for prizes for the Halloween contest each year, and she also helps fund Christmas baskets that are given to participants to ensure that they have a wonderful holiday.

Oasis of Hope would like to sincerely thank SUSAN HARBOR for being an invaluable volunteer and making an impact in the lives of the seniors in North Memphis!
