Fall Fest Recap – Thank You All for Coming; It was a Great Day!

October 28, 2014

2014-10-fall-fest110x116Saturday, October 18, 2014 was gifted with perfect clear skies, sunny weather, over 600 people fellow-shipping and llamas! That’s right, animals! The 13th Annual Oasis of Hope Fall Festival was one of the biggest celebrations of community bonding.

The event started off without a hitch. The DJ serenaded the crowd with their favorite tunes, as the volunteers took their stations. The air was filled with hamburgers, hot dogs, cotton candy and turkey legs; the brave few partook in the consumption of grilled pig tails. That wasn’t the only first though. The petting zoo was packed with curious children of all ages, staring in awe of the llamas in North Memphis!

The younger kids enjoyed the train, which made multiple packed trips along the outer edges of the parking lot. On the other side of the lot, our bike shop showcased their bikes and the riders’ talents, with an amazing obstacle course! In the field, the older children went airborne in the two bounce houses. Only the brave climbed the inflated steps to the top of the 24ft slide! Field games, including a hula hoop competition, egg and spoon challenge and potato sack race, filled the yard with excitement.

Under the gazebo, the balloon artist and face painters worked feverishly to keep up with the demand for their craft. The famous “clown from jook town” made his way through the crowd, delighting and scaring children and adults alike; some people just can’t get over the killer clown movie from the 80s.

Inside, our wonderful seniors played multiple rounds of bingo. Every half hour, raffle prizes were awarded, with the main prize being a $250 gift card to Wal-Mart! At the end of our event, we wrote personal statements to God, and released them on balloons.

Overall, the event was a huge success and it could have not been accomplished without the dedication of the Oasis support staff, dynamic volunteers and beautiful people of the area in which we serve. Every day is a special gift, but October 18th, God gave us a little sugar on top.

It was Another Annual Fall Festival to Remember!

October 30, 2013

bikde-rodeo-100x116God provided great weather; Memphis Academy of Health Sciences provided an awesome rhythm band, featuring our own Terrian Bass; 40 volunteers provided the much needed supervision of games and activities; Gary & Carol Adams’ group provided excellent food to enjoy; our MC and DJ kept the fun moving; and those who came enjoyed a great party.  The Bike Shop Ministry again conducted their Bike Rodeo at the festival.  Kids enjoyed the course and learned bicycle safety.  One of our sweet young Read 2 Succeed girls, Shairice Johnson, so impressed the Bike Shop instructors with her manners, bike safety and following the rules that they rewarded her with a bike of her own!  More than 250 people came to the 12th annual fall festival on Sat. Oct 26th.  Thank you to EVERYONE who helped make this event a success!  (pictures coming soon)

We Gathered to Remember and to Look Forward with Hope

March 10, 2013

Honoring Ms. Karen: On Wednesday, February 27, we hosted a dinner for our Oasis families in honor of Karen Durham, who went home to be with the Lord. It also gave our families the opportunity to know more about what Oasis of Hope is all about. The dinner was held at Bickford Community Center, and we had about 150 people in attendance for what turned out to be a very special evening. Please continue to pray for Karen’s family and loved ones!
