Meet Our Newest Oasis Family Member, Rev. Neko Sharkey

June 13, 2017

neko-sharkey-215x215 We have extremely exciting news!!

When Oasis of Hope began in 2004 we had one employee.

Fourteen years later, we are adding our ninth staffer to join our team (in addition to our real heavy hitters —-> our many volunteers!)!

Please help Terry (Executive Director) & staff in welcoming our newest Oasis of Hope addition, Rev. Neko Sharkey, our Ministry Director!

We are thrilled to welcome Neko and his family to our team due to our continual growth and need for assistance in overseeing our youth staff, but also ministering to community folks, in addition to developing a more concentrated arm for adult ministries coming soon!

neko-and-girls-web215x215As we have grown, we have continually felt the need for these additional programs, but have lacked capacity to add them! Neko will allow us to expand what we are already doing and create additional adult-focused services.

Also, everything we do from this point forward will be a team effort in cooperation with our ministry partners, Hope City Church. Due to this, we have so much growth potential as we mutually work together, but so many logistical and strategic details to figure out as we identify exactly what this cooperation looks like.

So in addition to seeing Neko around, please also give a warm, North Memphis, hug to his sweet wife, Catrice, and his three beautiful little ladies – Kelsi, Bailee & Trinity – who have already been actively involved in Vacation Bible School, so you might already recognize them.

Neko joins our staff officially full time beginning July 22nd. Until then, he will be working part-time so if you catch him, please say hello!

catrice-web215x215Welcome to the Oasis family!!

To volunteer or for more information about this ministry, contact Neko. Stay up-to-date by liking us on Facebook, following us on Twitter and Instagram, and checking our website for detailed information.

Exciting News For Oasis Appliance and Home!

June 11, 2017

oasis-appliance-100x1161) Praise God for His Provision: Oasis Appliance has been awarded a capacity building grant through Community LIFT! Due to this, we will have partial funding to hire a part-time assistant manager at the store this summer! This will help us provide better service to our customers and donors, as well as, free up our leadership team to seek more corporate partners and donations for the store. We are thankful to the Lord for his faithfulness to this nine-year-old ministry that continues to beat the odds and provide a needed service (affordable appliances and furniture) as well as jobs to our community!

2) Oasis Appliance Moving Home: As many of you know, Oasis Appliance & Home Furnishings suffered a fire last fall and has been operating out of a space in the Frayser Northgate Shopping Center. Well…God has graciously granted our prayers to move back into our neighborhood! Belz Enterprizes has generously given to this opportunity in the form of a long-term, extremely affordable, lease … AND substantial funding toward the renovation of the space! Dinner on Demand, Hope Church’s kitchen ministry, has also partnered in a HUGE way to provide $50,000 towards this needed renovation from fire to storefront! Additionally, Hope contractors and volunteers have stepped up to help save costs in the renovation by offering discounted or free services as we walk through the process of rebuilding. We feel God’s grace in this and want to give Him all the credit. Pray for us as we go through the challenging process of renovating a store that has suffered significant fire/smoke damage.

OA-fire-8-28-2016-web215x21—> In the meantime, if you’re a Hope Church attender, you can easily deliver any items both big and small to the “Oasis Appliance” trailer in the parking lot outside Entrance 3, or contact us for pickup, or call 901-577-0013.

We are temporarily operating in the Frayser Northgate Shopping Center, 3154 Thomas Street (behind AutoZone), Tuesday-Saturday 10a-4pm. Come check us out! Everyone is welcome to shop and every sale helps provide job training & employment for an under-resourced community.

SHOP! Everyone is welcome to shop and proceeds benefit this ministry

DONATE! Please continue to send us your donated appliances, furniture, and decor

VOLUNTEER: We’d love to plug you in; maybe this is a place you can give back to our city in 2017?

SPREAD THE WORD! Help us alert North Memphis, Frayser and beyond to our new, temporary location. Nothing is as valuable as a personal recommendation! Please tell your friends, family and neighbors through word-of-mouth or on social media (Follow us on Facebook).

PRAY! Please also be praying for direction as we continue to seek a permanent space in North Memphis to fulfill this practical need within our ministry neighborhood.

Thank you for your support!

Working Together To Start a New Food Pantry Partnership!

June 05, 2017

2017-4-food-pantry-web800We are excited about a new ministry partnership happening in North Memphis!

Often times ministry programs develop when one of our connected volunteers sees a need and is moved to help fill a void.

This is how Oasis Appliance began, and our Warrior Princesses program for middle school girls, and now … a food pantry aimed at assisting 60 North Memphis families whose children attend Memphis Scholars Caldwell Guthrie (MSCG) elementary school.

This came about after a volunteer reading tutor who works with students several days a month personally witnessed numerous students suffering from a lack of nutrition. Her heart was moved, she shared this need, and several partnerships began working together to do something about it! MSCG, Mid-South Food Bank, Hope City Church, and Oasis of Hope combined forces and have just begun to serve 60 families who will receive groceries and toiletries through this initiative. The food component of this mission has become an added value to MSCG’s new outreach center which also includes a clothes closet and washer and dryer.

2017-4-food-pantry-(13)-webSixty families have been carefully identified and are personally invited to receive the bi-monthly box of groceries and toiletries. This means that 30 families will be served every other month for the next 12 months (including the summer). Grocery boxes may consist of items such as canned fruit & vegetables, beans, cereal, juice and milk.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

In an effort to keep the boxes of food consistent, we are in need of financial donations to support this ongoing mission! Family boxes of groceries and toiletries cost approximately $25/each due to buying in bulk and utilizing assistance from organizations like the Mid-South Food Bank.

Donations can be made online or checks can be sent to Oasis of Hope, 8500 Walnut Grove Road, Cordova, TN 38018. Please list ‘Food Pantry’ in the memo.

WHEN IS THE FOOD DISTRIBUTED?

This outreach is available every 2nd Saturday of the month from 11am-12pm, by appointment only.

We are grateful for the tender heart of the volunteer who looked way beyond her important mission of reading with students, and not only spoke up, but has now put into motion a practical, helpful program that will make a BIG impact in the lives of 60 families! That is what ministry looks like!

2015-1-staff-176x176It’s tax season again, which means BOOM-TIME for Oasis Appliance & Home Furnishings!

Our customers often wait to get their tax refund before purchasing needed appliances or pieces of furniture. Keeping our stockroom filled is a challenge year-round, but keeping up with demand January-April is especially challenging because we are busy! It’s a good problem to have!

If you have an appliance that you are considering updating, or some furniture that you’d like to donate to a good cause – the best timing is now!

Sign Up with Amazon Smile and Re-Enroll Your Kroger Card

April 30, 2017

kroger 275x303Kroger Requires You to Re-Enroll Your Desired Non-Profit Each January: Shop at Kroger and Donate 3-5% without writing a check!

Each January 1st, all Kroger Community Reward Participants are required to renew their organization of choice to receive Kroger reward payments. We are hoping you will choose Oasis of Hope!

It may seem like a small act, but it’s a huge help! Designating Oasis of Hope on your Kroger card allows you to donate to our ministry each time you shop for groceries or buy gas!

For example, if 2,500 people spent $100, Oasis could receive a total of $7,500!

We can do a lot of ministry with that!

It takes about 3 minutes and registering your Kroger Plus Card is easier than ever:

If you already have an existing Kroger account:

  1. Sign in to your Kroger account at www.kroger.com/communityrewards
  2. Click ‘View Your Rewards Details,’ edit your Community Rewards, and search for ‘Oasis of Hope’ (or 80469). Click ‘enroll’

If you are registering your Kroger account for the first time:

  1. Creat an account at www.kroger.com/communityrewards
  2. Follow the prompts to enter your email, password, & address.
  3. Click ‘View Your Rewards Details’ and designate Oasis of Hope as your Community Rewards recipient by typing ‘Oasis of Hope’ in the Search box (or #80469). Click ‘enroll’

That’s it!

amazon-smile-logo110x116AmazonSmile will donate 0.5% of eligible purchases to Oasis of Hope! Same products, same service!

To designate your existing Amazon account:

  1. Go to www.smile.amazon.com (email/password); click ‘Sign In’
  2. Type “Oasis of Hope” in the search field (Cordova, TN) & select … then Start Shopping! From then on Amazon will remind you to sign in with using the ‘Smile’ site every time you log on.

Shop online via Smile.Amazon.com rather than Amazon.com. Smile.Amazon.com has the same products, prices, and service as Amazon.com, and Oasis of Hope will receive a donation from Amazon equal to .5% of your purchases placed through Smile.Amazon.com.

Invite family and friends from across the country to support Oasis of Hope by designating Oasis of Hope, Inc. on their Amazon account and shop through Smile.Amazon.com.

If you believe in what we are doing in inner city Memphis, this is a valuable way to support us. If you’d like more information about our programs, please check out our website, like us on Facebook, or follow us on Twitter.

SPARCC – Exciting Opportunities are Beginning!

April 02, 2017

IMG_2527-web800Praise God for the favor He has shown North Memphis. A group of well-known national foundations put out a Strong, Prosperous, And Resilient Communities Challenge (SPARCC) grant opportunity…and North Memphis was one of 6 locations selected from all over the nation! Recently meetings were held to discuss how this will play out for our community. It will take time with some significant money on the front end to organize and plan out the strategy.

Then there will be another opportunity for program dollars down the road if our plan is one of those selected. Oasis of Hope has participated on the local team trying to organize and move the ball forward. It has been a huge blessing already as many of the stakeholders in North Memphis haven’t taken the opportunity in the past to work together, deepen relationships and seek to better our community together.

The SPARCC program focuses on racial equity, health, and climate resilience…all aspects that need improvement in our part of the city. It will take a lot of time and hard work planning this out, but it’s great work that will have a positive impact on our community.

For more information about SPARCC, see www.sparcchub.org.

– Terry Hoff, Executive Director

Goal: Save N Memphis Every Penny! Free Tax Filing Begins

March 04, 2017

Oasis-VITA-100x116LET US FILE YOUR TAXES FOR FREE!

It’s our 11th year and so far we’ve saved North Memphis nearly $3 million!

To most of us, the phrase ‘Tax Season’ elicits feelings of dread, overwhelming piles of receipts and needed paperwork, and either forking out hard-earned cash to hire a professional or summoning the will to attempt filing on your own.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

At Oasis of Hope’s VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) center, our accountants are counting down until opening day begins and they will gladly dig into your numbers, help you find all the earned income credits you are due, present your needed information to the IRS, and send you on your way with no stress, a smile on your face, and tell you they are willing to do all of this at absolutely NO charge!

WHY? Because we care.

Because we enjoy investing in more than just money, and want to invest in people too. We realize that by providing trusted and IRS trained volunteers, we are building relationships with North Memphis and offering them an honest, reliable way of filing returns at no cost with one of our main goals being to find each person all the earned income tax credits they are eligible for, as well as, saving them all the filing fees other companies charge. This saves many low-income families hundreds of dollars every year and puts these precious dollars back into their households and our community. The impact is not only individual, but positively effects the local economy as a whole.

vita-free-tax-filing-100x11“We have many repeat customers who come to us every year,” says former VITA Project Coordinator, Doug Edwards. ”One lady who stood out to me a couple of years ago had just lost her mother after also losing her father the previous year. In addition, she was dealing with her own health issues and had recently lost her job, so she was very much in a world of grief and needed someone to talk with and listen. I spent about an hour with her, not only reviewing her taxes but also talking about her situation and helping to boost her spirits. She called me after she got her refund and thanked me for the help and for being supportive and a good listener. Ours is not just a ministry of help, but a ministry of love. It is so much more than just doing their taxes. We get to know these folks on a personal level and they become our friends. They trust us, they appreciate the help, but they especially appreciate the personal attention we provide.”

This year serves as the beginning of our 11th tax season, and to-date our volunteers have filed 1,667 returns saving North Memphis residents $2,984,047 in tax credits and prep and filing fees!

QUALIFICATIONS: Free tax help is provided to people who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities, the elderly, and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance.

TO FILE: If you would like to file, simply stop by the Bickford Community Center (233 Henry Ave) any Saturday from 9:30am-1:00pm every Saturday in February and March. No appointment needed.

WHAT TO BRING:
Proof of identification
Documents showing real estate taxes paid last year
Social Security Cards (or individual Taxpayer ID Number, ITIN) for you, your spouse, and dependents
Birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents
Wage and earning statement(s) Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, from all employers
Interest and dividend statements from banks (Form 1099)
A copy of last year’s Federal and State returns if possible
Bank routing numbers and account numbers for direct deposit
Total paid for day care provider and the day care provider’s tax ID number
Information for other income
Information for deductions/credits

TO VOLUNTEER: If this kind of practical, hands-on ministry sounds exciting to you, we’d love to add you to our team! This is an IRS sanctioned site so you will need to go through a simple on-line training and certification pre-work (not hard). We will train and prepare you for electronic filing. For more information on volunteering, contact Peggy at pfball@memphis.edu.

If you’d like more information about our programs, please check out our website, like us on Facebook, or follow us on Twitter.
