Summer Baseball Teaches So Much More Than the Game

July 23, 2015

oasis-summer-baseball-100x1We are currently looking for volunteers and sponsors to invest in our youth in North Memphis through our summer baseball program.

We are thrilled to again partner with the Red Birds RBI league! They are returning to our community and with our Parks and Little League World Series Teams, we anticipate having 7 teams this summer! Pray for us!

Kids from the neighborhood, ages 4-16, are invited to participate Monday-Friday from 9a-12p for no fee in Oasis’ Summer Baseball program. They are divided into teeball, coach pitch, and kid’s pitch categories to teach appropriate skills and provide needed encouragement.

But we all know we’re not doing this just for the love of the game.

So much more is at work here: We want kids to bond with coaches and volunteers, develop meaningful relationships, provide healthy activities, get kids moving, bring a variety of ages together, offer healthy food, and even more.

Last year our teams won almost all of their games, but even if the scoreboard never shows a win, this ministry is a home-run!

WHO: Kids ages 4-16 or volunteers of any age
WHEN: M-F from 9a-1p – Time To Be Confirmed
WHERE: Bickford Community Center Ball Field and Manassas HS fields

Hear from Coach Moore-Goodbye Summer Baseball

August 12, 2014

oasis-summer-baseball-100x1This summer was a great success for the kids most importantly and also, Colby and I. Everyday throughout the summer we had about 25 kids show up for baseball.

We had two different teams that we assembled after the first week of practice, which consisted of a Coach Pitch team and a Kids Pitch team. The teams both did very well this summer and have improved a lot from last summer. The coach pitch team went 8-1 and the kids pitch team went 8-0.

I am greatly pleased by the effort these kids gave me this season. These records are proof of how much hard work and determination they put into it this summer. I couldn’t be more excited for these kids after this season. I honestly think baseball is becoming one of the most popular sports down in the Bickford area, which is just so exciting to me as a coach.

How One Guy Used His Love for the Game (Baseball That Is!)

September 21, 2013

2013-7-team-photoThe Summer Baseball season is already half over, but the lessons learned, the love & care invested by our coaches and volunteers, and the memories built swinging out a few victories and a few losses will be impressions that last a lifetime for the kids from North Memphis who have participated in this great program (of course there is no fee to play).

The Bickford Tigers Baseball Team has been a largely successful weekday program for neighborhood kids! The junior team (ages 12 and under) has an outstanding record of 5-0! The older team (ages 13-16) has played with great intensity against very talented teams has a record of 2-4.

These kids show such a passion for the game and in the words of Coach Tyler Moore,

‘Coach Rob and I are so blessed to teach these athletes what baseball is all about. The kids have made a huge impact on us and our goal is to make a difference in their lives as well.’

You never know when you might be able to use your personal talents to help others as can be learned from Coach Tyler whose mom attended Urban Plunge last fall. When the Plungers toured Oasis’ ministry neighborhood, she kept thinking about her son and his love for baseball.

Fast-forward several months and Tyler was excited to commit to teaching a summer program, recruit his former teammate Rob Alvarex to assist, and was happy to have former Oasis baseball coach who lives in the neighborhood, Barry Landon, round off their coaching staff. Also, an anonymous philanthropist offered to fund the program! We can’t thank these guys enough for making such a deep impact in the kids’ lives and for providing a healthy activity for them to participate in Monday-Friday!

Games are held Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:00am at various locations. If you are interested in cheering on the teams or would like more information about this ministry, contact Coach Tyler.

Hey Batter Batter SWING; Summer Baseball Begins

June 01, 2013

manassas-baseball-100x116We are thrilled to announce that there has been enough volunteer interest to start a summer baseball program for boys and girls ages 8-16 years old beginning Monday, June 3rd and ending when school starts! Players will meet at the Bickford Community Center Monday-Friday from 8am-12p and snacks will be provided (something that is often a concern for kids when school is out). Check out our Summer Baseball Photo Gallery!

Many thanks to those who are committing their time to this, and special thanks to Head Coach, Tom Moore who finished his first year at UT Knoxville and is a longtime player prior to that at Briarcrest!

Without healthy, positive activities to participate in, inner city kids can easily be swayed into getting involved with gangs, drugs and destructive behavior. We are thrilled to once again offer summer baseball to our program!

If you have a heart for kids and a love for the game, we would love for you to join the team! If you would like more information regarding this ministry, contact Terrice.
