How the Summer Leadership Institute Impacted Youth

July 30, 2018

web800-2018-middle-school-fOasis of Hope just finished its first Summer Leadership Institute (SLI), and we saw God work in tremendous ways! Our Youth Development Team was tasked with recruiting boys and girls from each milestone (High School, Middle School, and Elementary) to spend the summer growing in leadership to be our front runners this upcoming school year and to assist us in spearheading our goal of empowering our community.

Through the SLI, we purposed to equip our apprentices with the tools and support needed to advance in academics, leadership, teamwork, and life skills, through dedicated life-on-life mentorship, tutoring, training, team building exercises, and peer to peer networking.

It was a heavy challenge, and our team met it head on.

Our SLI students spent this summer learning about topics rooted in biblical truth on identity, God as our Father, being a Child of God, Jesus as a child, how to honor our mother, father, friends, and ourselves, home cred vs. street cred, how to become better communicators, how to love yourself, reputation, being an image bearer of God, and dealing with conflict, among other things.

Students were also given the opportunity to visit some of the best our city has to offer. We took learning excursions to Slave Haven, the Memphis Zoo, Shelby Forest, The National Civil Rights Museum, Memphis Rox, and The Pink Palace to name a few. SLI students also learned the basics of coding through Innovation, a partnership with the Riverview Community Center.

For two full weeks, our Summer Leadership Institute welcomed volunteers from across the city to expose our youth to various sports, arts, and dance activities.

Our middle and high school SLI students were blessed with an opportunity to spend a week at For the Kingdom Camp where nearly two dozen of them decided to start a relationship with Jesus Christ! Since then, our youth developers have been working to strengthen relationships with those students and to help find them mentors to begin discipleship relationships.

We, at Oasis, could not do the work we do without the individuals all throughout our Memphis community who sacrificially give of their time, talent, and treasure to help our ministry go. Thank you to ALL of the individuals and organizations who generously supported us this summer!!
