Summer Means It’s Time for Baseball! Batter Up!

June 04, 2017

manassas-baseball-100x116Our youth (and their parents!) desire fun and active things to do while school is out and few things signify summer fun like baseball!

We partner with A Game Sports to provide a program teaching fundamentals, team spirit and fun competition. Over the last few years we have had winning seasons by our teams as they put into practice what they’re learning. This year we plan to have 2 teams (14 & under and 10 & under).

How You Can Help:

Donate: If you’d like to help make this American summer tradition possible for our kids (and free to them) – the costs for this outreach including coaching, league fees, equipment and transportation is roughly $4,000.

Volunteer: Also, if you like baseball and have some time, we’d love your help coaching these awesome kids!

Send Your Kids: Practices will be held most evenings at the Bickford Community Center baseball field. Schedules will be handed out at practice. Teams will be divided into a 10 & Under and a 14 & Under.

Thanks Hope Church For Bringing Hope to N Memphis!

June 02, 2017

bringing-hope-web800Urban ministry is all about partnerships because without them, the vision to make an impact is too vast! So, when Hope Church shared that they were committing to a daily intensive reading and lunchtime manners program in a school we have been investing in for years too, we were THRILLED! It’s been great to see the students at Caldwell-Guthrie Memphis Scholars Elementary in North Memphis being loved on from many angles!

Hope’s new program – “Bringing Hope” – did just that this year! Thanks to Program Leader Jacqueline Smith’s vision & understanding of classroom needs, volunteers answered the call to show up weekly to be a source of encouragement & support to teachers. Each volunteer committed to serving one hour a week during Reading Block in the same classroom through out the year. Working with a small group of students, Hope volunteers read with students & utilized guided instruction to enhance reading comprehension skills.

As always, volunteers soon learned that as they encouraged students & teachers, the rewards were reciprocal. Seeing students improve their reading comprehension & grow their desire to learn is rewarding enough, but becoming part of the community at Memphis Scholars Caldwell Guthrie is priceless.

Thank you Hope!
