R2S2017-1-web800Growing up in Christ…..”  Ephesians 4:15-16

“So we become more and more in every way like Christ who is the Head of his body, the Church. Under his direction, the whole body is fitted together perfectly, and each part in its own special way helps the other parts, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.

“Each part”- each faithful volunteer sacrificing one evening for 28 weeks Sept-May to read Bible stories with students, memorize Bible verses, improve vocabulary, gain sight word recognition & increase reading comprehension. “Each part”- students committed to memorizing Bible verse & improving their reading skills even after going to school all day. “Each part”- parents valuing Read2Succeed & reinforcing reading skills & Bible verse memorization. All together working so that the whole body is healthy & growing!!! Together we worked helping each other & grew in our knowledge of God with a love for one another.

R2S2017-2-web800This year, seventeen Read2Succeed students attended 28 weeks of tutoring, once a week with their same committed coach. Students were challenged to learn a minimum of 120 new sight words (Fry Words), pass 7 reading comprehension tests (Bench Marks) with 80% or better accuracy, & memorize 10 foundational Bible verses. Goals were posted on a “Score Board” where they could visualize their progress weekly.  Just as an athlete knows the goal of the game & can visualize their score at any point during the game, likewise, our Read2Succeed students understood what their goals were & how they were “scoring.” Parents were informed of goals & met with coordinators to monitor progress through out the year.

DID THEY WIN??? HOW DID THEY SCORE??

Based on “Team Read2Succeed” having 17 students, one student of whom is not included in reading & Bible memory goals due to special needs and joining in mid-January:

16 students: grades 2nd through 5th grade
17 volunteers
2 Oasis of Hope middle school interns (discipleship at work!)
28 weeks/42 hours
96% attendance
94% of students met or exceeded the Bench Mark goal
100% of students met or exceeded the Fry Word goal
+468 = average number of Fry Sight Words gained per student
+6.8 (out of 10)= average number of Bible verses memorized per student
17 birthday celebrations with cakes & balloons
1 Birthday Club Parent Volunteer Coordinator

Each working together, encouraging each other, so as to strengthen the Body of Christ is a winning combination!!! “Healthy and growing and full of love.”

Helping Young Readers Get READy To Meet Their Goals

May 07, 2017

read2succeed-215x215“READy” is a summer reading program being offered by Oasis of Hope in the month of June at our ministry house, The Cut.  It’s an extension of Read2Succeed (R2S) and only for students (grades 2nd-5th) who attended during the Read2Succeed school year, but who are behind a grade level in reading their sight words & struggle with basic phonic skills.

Many of these students reached their individual goals set by R2S: gained 150 or more sight words from their initially assessed baseline & passed 7 Bench Mark reading comprehension quizzes. Even with this past year’s gains they remain their sight word recognition & reading comprehension is below their grade equivalency.

These students will attend two hours a day, two days a week, for four weeks (Every Tuesday in June: 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th from 12p-2p).

Each student will be matched with a coach and receive instruction in phonics, fluency & sight words.  The typical student loses almost 3 months worth of skills over the summer. READy should deter this loss & instead equip them for the new school.

Lions Cage: A New Program For Middle School Guys

May 01, 2017

2016-tylon-walkerFor many years we have offered an excellent program for middle school ladies called Warrior Princesses to address important issues facing this season of life. This program has been exceedingly popular with both girls and volunteers, so much so that we knew we needed an equivalent program for the guys. So, we are thrilled to announce Lions Cage Boys Club for our middle school boys!

This is a mentoring program geared toward urban boys living in a disadvantaged environment in grades 4-6 where they can learn skills that are relevant to their actual life experiences. We seek to help develop character and dignity in each young man through our partnership with a diverse group of dedicated mentors. We also want to increase their networks by connecting them to resources that will enhance their scope of life.

2017 Lions Cage Schedule (subject to change):
Jan. 7: Orientation (outing)
Jan. 21: The Four Faces of Manhood: an Overview of the principles of Manhood (Self-Defense)
Feb. 4: The King Face (A man’s leadership, worth, goals, and ambitions … made for greatness!)
Feb. 18: Field trip – TBD
Mar. 4: Warrior Face (What should a man take a stand for? Peer pressure, bullying, conflict resolution, and more – Self defense)

April 15: Lover Face (Why is Jesus and Love important to manhood – Easter weekend)

Meeting Dates: 1st and 3rd Saturdays, 10:30a-12p

THERE ARE TWO WAYS TO SUPPORT OUR EFFORTS:

1. Volunteer with us: We need several male volunteers to assist who are willing to commit to a mentoring relationship. We’d especially love African-American males to join us!

2. Donate funds to support this ministry: We always appreciate financial support; donate online or by mail here.
