Exciting New Programs at KIPP Middle School!

September 27, 2013

tutoring-web100x116We have expanded our partnership with KIPP through some exciting programs for the 2013-2014 school year. We need volunteers who can help with two critical needs.

1. We need  tutors in reading and math on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday from 4-5pm.  What a great way to make a practical difference in the lives of one youth in our community.  However, you will most likely be blessed even more than the youth you get to know.

2. We need assistant facilitators for one of the Think Tank business classes on Fridays (10-11:30am; 11:30-1; or 1-3pm).   Think Tank is a creative elective that teaches 6th grade students crucial business and entrepreneurial skills that children are rarely taught in schools.  It is the brainchild of a Hope member, Stella Payton.  This again is another GREAT example of any talent or knowledge you may have can most likely be used to transform lives through the Oasis of Hope.  If you are interested in helping with either program please contact Terrice Thomas (terrice@oasis-of-hope.com<mailto:terrice@oasis-of-hope.com>, 527-0074).

Annual Seniors Wii Tournament: Go Hard or Go Home!

September 26, 2013

seniors-playing-wii-web100xThe Oasis Seniors will compete in the annual Wii games tournament on October 10 from 10am-noon. The winner will receive  a cash prize of $100. Additionally, he/she will have bragging rights for an entire year as the official winner of the tournament.  They have been in training for months, so come and enjoy the “friendly” competition and be inspired that you’re never to old to kick someone’s (you know what).  The tournament is coordinated by Susan Harber, a volunteer from Hope Church.  You too can have this kind of fun volunteering in one of our ministries!  Come check it out.

Getting Ahead Class Begins Again

Bearwater Park – Pray that the Transformation Continues!

September 22, 2013

bearwater-park-100x116Thanks to the generosity of many of our volunteers, donors, the City of Memphis, North Memphis CDC, and others, the Bearwater Park Phase 1 construction is complete!

As we are wrapping up the first phase, we are already working on plans for Phase Two! Please keep us in your prayers as we begin the tedious footwork to raise funds, develop infrastructure and start this massive process all over again.

But before we get ahead of ourselves, we still need to raise a final $50,000 of the $2.1 million project for Phase One, so if you are encouraged by what you see and want to help us cross that financial finish line, you can give online or make checks payable to Oasis of Hope and put Bearwater Park in the memo. Mail checks to Oasis of Hope, 8500 Walnut Grove Rd, Memphis TN 38018. Thank You!

If you are interested in filling out an application to live in one of these homes, please contact our management company, Northern Inc at 901/526-7155 or stop in at there office located at 62 Union Ave.

If you would like more information regarding this ministry, contact Terrice. Stay up-to-date by liking us on Facebook, following us on Twitter and checking our website for pictures, videos and current information.

How One Guy Used His Love for the Game (Baseball That Is!)

September 21, 2013

2013-7-team-photoThe Summer Baseball season is already half over, but the lessons learned, the love & care invested by our coaches and volunteers, and the memories built swinging out a few victories and a few losses will be impressions that last a lifetime for the kids from North Memphis who have participated in this great program (of course there is no fee to play).

The Bickford Tigers Baseball Team has been a largely successful weekday program for neighborhood kids! The junior team (ages 12 and under) has an outstanding record of 5-0! The older team (ages 13-16) has played with great intensity against very talented teams has a record of 2-4.

These kids show such a passion for the game and in the words of Coach Tyler Moore,

‘Coach Rob and I are so blessed to teach these athletes what baseball is all about. The kids have made a huge impact on us and our goal is to make a difference in their lives as well.’

You never know when you might be able to use your personal talents to help others as can be learned from Coach Tyler whose mom attended Urban Plunge last fall. When the Plungers toured Oasis’ ministry neighborhood, she kept thinking about her son and his love for baseball.

Fast-forward several months and Tyler was excited to commit to teaching a summer program, recruit his former teammate Rob Alvarex to assist, and was happy to have former Oasis baseball coach who lives in the neighborhood, Barry Landon, round off their coaching staff. Also, an anonymous philanthropist offered to fund the program! We can’t thank these guys enough for making such a deep impact in the kids’ lives and for providing a healthy activity for them to participate in Monday-Friday!

Games are held Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:00am at various locations. If you are interested in cheering on the teams or would like more information about this ministry, contact Coach Tyler.
