Wait…Wait…Wait…Now Go! Building Has Finally Begun!

January 20, 2013

It was five years ago that the Oasis Baseball Coach, Michael Timmons, was in the right place at the right time

and came across the opportunity for Oasis to buy the old Cedar Court Apartment complex, located in the heart of the community at 1007 N 7th Street in North Memphis. These apartments had a rich history of being a problem property in the neighborhood and were feared by locals due to the drug activity, vandalism, robbery, and gang activity that stemmed from here.

After successfully obtaining the fourteen-building property for $270,000, plans to renovate went into full swing and Hope volunteers quickly got to work gutting the complex. However, after receiving $1.5 million dollars in grants to tear down and rebuild NEW instead, Oasis’ plans switched gears and the next few years were spent obtaining funding, drawing plans, maneuvering through red tape, coordinating partnerships, securing contractors, building infrastructure and finally … FINALLY …

The actual building has officially begun … and the houses are going up FAST!

A combination of ten single family and duplex homes will be built in Phase I with a timeline of having families move in this summer! What a blessing it will be to offer beautiful, safe, and most importantly – affordable – homes to neighborhood families and residents.

Of course while Phase I is actively wrapping up, we are working behind the scenes and are in full swing with the needed steps for Phase 2 which will entail building an additional 15 homes including a playground and a community center. The final stages will consist of an additional 26 homes and will conclude this enormous project.

Soon you can get involved! Watch our website and facebook page

for volunteer opportunities as we will begin the exciting process of getting to do some hands-on work ourselves, like painting, landscaping and light construction.

We can’t thank you enough for your patience and continued support through this long, five-year process to date! We are grateful beyond words that God placed this opportunity in our laps and look forward to seeing how something as foundational as affordable, beautiful housing can impact a community!
