Let The Shopping Begin; Oasis Toy Store Opens Soon!

October 16, 2011

As you rush around doing your Christmas shopping, please consider picking up toys to donate to the Oasis of Hope Toy Store too! The Store will be open November 30-December 12, at 627 Chelsea Avenue, in the Caldwell Elementary neighborhood where we sell toys for drastically reduced prices to allow families to purchase their gifts with pride. Especially in today’s economy, families are struggling to be able to afford Christmas Toys for their children. Help make that a possibility…get involved in the toy store outreach.

The Manassas Tigers opened their 2011 football season with a Jamboree win over Westwood on August 12th. The following week the Tigers won an exciting game (26-12) against Booker T. Washington at BTW stadium. On August 25th the Tigers lost their first game (8-0) in a defensive struggle against Mitchell. The Tigers bounced back from this loss with strong performances against Kingsbury (20-7) and Northside (38-0). On September 15th the Tigers came from behind with a fourth quarter safety to edge out Frayser 8-7. Manassas dropped its next game to arch rival Trezevant (24-13) after watching a first quarter 13 point lead disappear. Manassas lost another close game to Central (12-6) this past Friday night.

The Tigers have struggled moving the ball, offensively, over the past few weeks. Several Tigers have, however, stood out offensively over the course of the season, including running back Melvin Boond (#4), who averages more than seven yards per carry, running back and two way starter, Xavier Jackson (#3), who averages more than 9.5 yards per carry, and wide out and two way starter Joe Williams (#9) who leads the team in receptions and averages more than 20 yards per catch.

The Tigers’ defense has performed well throughout the season and, in many respects, carried the Tigers in some tough fought wins. Tigers linebacker Maurico Williams (#21) leads the team in tackles and has been a consistent impact player. Defensive linemen Isaiah Brown (#28), Autavious (“TayTay”) Wiseman (#51), Demetrius James (#47), and team sack leader, Willie Ross (#50) have also turned in strong defensive performances week in and week out.

The Tigers face neighborhood rival Douglass in the “Soul Bowl” on Thursday, October 13th. Please note that this game, originally scheduled for Friday the 14th at BTW has been rescheduled to Thursday, October 13 at J.P. Freeman Stadium. The Tigers appreciate Oasis of Hope’s consistent support!  –Jeff Germany

Ride The Greenline With Our Bike Ministry On October 1st

Ride The Greenline With Our Bike Ministry On October 1st

bikesOn Sat. October 1st (Noon- 4pm), the Oasis Bike Shop Ministry will attend and ride in the 1st Annual Shelby Farms Park Greenline Birthday Bash. This consists of seven miles of live music, great food, and healthy, family fun. We will have a booth set up at one of the celebration points along the Greenline (the Waring Street access) and could use a few more volunteers to either bike the trail or man the table. If Oct.1st doesn’t work for you, we are continually looking for volunteers to help organize and run the shop which is in its beginning stages and is located in the Oasis Appliance Store, 1294 Thomas St. There is a lot of momentum about the Greenline and expanding it all the way from Shelby Farms (near Hope Church) to Mud Island which means it might run right through our ministry neighborhood (see related News 5 article)! The goals of this ministry are to help influence inner city kids to a healthier lifestyle, acquire bikes, teach them basic repairs, and of course build relationships and impact lives throughout the process. If you are interested in getting involved in this ministry contact Bill.
