Rayford Pitches Humes Middle to the Playoffs!

June 13, 2009

Rayford, Humes Middle Baseball PitcherRayford, a 13-year-old Humes Middle School Baseball team member, started pitching for the first time this spring under Coach Michael who is a volunteer Coach for Oasis of Hope.  In Rayford’s own words, “I was nervous when I first started pitching, because I had never pitched before. It was fun when I started learning, but I had a lot to learn. All I knew was to throw the ball to the catcher – that’s all.”

But, incredibly, Rayford pitched 13 strikeouts in his first game! The Humes Middle School Baseball team finished the season with a record of 6 wins and 3 losses.

“Coach Mike taught me the basics, and I thank him. The Lord blessed me with a great arm, a great coach and also a good team,” says Rayford. “I want to thank a lot of people for helping me – Coach Mike, Coach Reaves, Coach Tim, Coach Barry, Coach Norm, Mr. Terry and my team.”

“It was only Rayford’s second full season of playing baseball. He continues to work hard this summer, and all of his coaches are very proud of the young man he is becoming,” says Coach Michael.

Way to go, Rayford! Keep up the hard work! Thank you to all of the volunteer coaches for helping to make this season a success for Humes Middle!

Change A Kid’s Life; Sponsor Them For $150 To Attend Bible Camp!

KAA camp
signWho says inner city kids don’t enjoy the country?  Watch this amazing video footage and/or view our photo gallery of what went on last summer when 10 of our kids from the Oasis neighborhood attended a week-long camp, inner city style.  In the words of the kids, camp was ‘crunking exciting!’ … ‘superman crazy hype!’ … ‘freaky & weird!’  It was a powerful time of bonding, having fun, tubing, swimming, zip-lining and most importantly, learning more about a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Read Oasis staffer, Brenda’s blog about camp below.  Will you consider sponsoring 1 of the 23 kids going this year? Click here to donate online or by check.

As many of you know, it was with much apprehension and anxiety (and plain old FEAR) that I embarked on a week-long adventure last summer to Kids Across America Kamp near Branson, Missouri, with 10 of our inner city youth.  Well, God truly traveled with us on that journey, because not only did I survive, but I was also blessed beyond words to go through such an amazing “mountain-top” Christian experience with these kids!  So much so, that I am going back this summer…this time with 23 of our kids, 1 of their moms, and 1 youth worker – 26 people in all!  I’ve been praying so hard about this, and feel sure that God is going to do miraculous things in the hearts and lives of these kids!

But…we need your help to make this happen!  Not only do we need to raise more money for the additional kids that we are taking, but this means that our transportation costs will be higher, too.

Any donation (click here to donate online or get info about sending a check) would be greatly appreciated!

– $150 will send 1 child to camp

– $200 will cover the camp fee for 1 child, plus provide extra for part of the transportation cost and needed camp supplies

You can check out the following links for more information about KAA and pictures from our trip last summer.  Also, please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions you might have!

Thank you so much for ALL you are already doing in the lives of these young people!

God bless,
Brenda
