In 2003 Oasis of Hope leased a home directly across the street from Caldwell Elementary School (now called KIPP Academy) so that we could be a visible and helpful presence in the community. Due to the color we painted this house, green, the nickname 'The Green House' aptly applied. From this location we are able to offer after-school computer lab, youth Bible studies, staff offices, as well as, a safe place for local kids and their families to hang out.
In 2007 we realized we were quickly outgrowing The Green House and had an opportunity to purchase another building just around the corner. After completely renovating this property, it now houses our after-school Read 2 Suceed program, youth Bible studies and staff offices. The name, 'The Cut' stuck because the building is located on a footpath intersection where people 'cut through' the neighborhood.
In 2009 the culmination of years of prayers and hard work lead to the launching of Oasis Appliance, a non-profit used appliance store that provides job training, employment, quality/affordable appliances & furniture for area residents and positive business activity in an economically depressed community. For more information on this ministry, go see Oasis Appliance.
Thanks to a mutually beneficial partnership with the City of Memphis where they provide the building and we provide the programs and staffing, we are able to host numerous community programs and outreaches in this facility including our daily Senior Citizens' Program, our annual Volunteer Income Tax Assistance outreach, youth sports, and community events such as the annual Easter Egg Hunt.
